Joaquin Gonzalez Varela graduated from the Instituto Tecnologico Autonomo de Mexico (ITAM) with a bachelor's degree in Actuarial Science and later received a Diploma in Corporate Finance at the same Institution. He joined Wal-Mart Mexico in 1989. With more than 20 years of experience in retailing, Joaquín has accepted several positions within Wal-Mart Mexico with responsibilities in areas such as Merchandising, Finance, Logistics and Operations.

 
Initially, Joaquín was Chief of the Risk Management department, later moving into Corporate Finance. In 1995, he took the role of Accounts Payable Director. From 1997 through 1999, Joaquín was in charge of migrating all systems to the Wal-Mart platform. In 2000, he moved to the position of Replenishment Director, and the following year was named Vice President of Logistics and Distribution. In 2005, Joaquín accepted the charge of Senior Vice President for the Self-Service Division, which includes the areas of Merchandising and Operations for 3 unit divisions, Wal-Mart Supercenter, Superama Supermarkets and Bodega Aurrera warehouse stores.
 
Currently, Joaquín is the Vice President & Regional General Manager for Region 10, in Florida. He is based in Miami, Florida, and is responsible for store operations and personnel at 210 Wal-Mart stores.
Prior to joining Wal-Mart, Joaquín worked in Seguros América Insurance Company, from 1988 to 1989.
